Tommy’s Take – The Fitzpatrick Family Feels Right at Home
What a week in the world of golf, but honestly, there’s only one place to start—the Fitzpatrick family are absolutely running the show right now. Matt and his younger brother Alex have just gone and won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the PGA Tour’s only team event, and the scenes on the 18th green were pure box office.
Let me set the scene for you. The brothers went into the final day with a four-shot lead after a ridiculous 15-under 57 on Saturday. But then the nerves kicked in on the back nine—double bogey at 12, dropped shots at 13 and 14—and suddenly that lead was gone. Kris Ventura and Kristoffer Reitan had posted 30-under in the clubhouse, and it looked like a playoff was on the cards.
But here’s where Matt Fitzpatrick reminded everyone why he’s world number three. From a greenside bunker on the par-5 18th, with the tournament on the line, he hit the shot. Long bunker shot, back pin—arguably one of the hardest in golf—and he nipped it out to 14 inches. Left his brother Alex with a tap-in for the win. Just incredible.
For Matt, that’s his third win on the PGA Tour this season, following the Valspar and the RBC Heritage, and he was runner-up at the Players to Cameron Young as well. He’s now up to a career-high number three in the world.
But the real story? Alex Fitzpatrick. He’d already won on the DP World Tour this year, but this victory secures him a two-year PGA Tour exemption. It’s massive. He can make the switch immediately without needing to rely on the top 10 Race to Dubai spots. Him and his brother, both with cards on the biggest tour? That’s special.
Quick shoutout to Bernd Wiesberger, too. The Austrian just claimed his ninth win on the European tour at the China Open. Seriously impressive.
But this week belongs to the Fitzpatricks.
