Tommy’s Take: Spaun Survives the Storm as the Masters Finally Arrives
Right then, folks, another week down and what a week it was. We had weather delays, marathon sessions, and a finish that had everyone on their feet. The Valero Texas Open is usually a tough grind, but this year, it was a survival mission.
J.J. Spaun reminded everyone why he’s a major champion. He posted a 17-under-par 271 after a closing 67 to grab his second Valero Texas Open title and his third PGA Tour victory. It wasn’t easy though. Bob MacIntyre, Matt Wallace, and Michael Kim all finished a single shot back, with MacIntyre coming painfully close after leading for most of the week. It’s a massive result for Spaun heading into the big one.
And speaking of the big one... the eight-month major drought is officially over. The Masters starts this Thursday at Augusta National.
We’ve been waiting for this one for a while, but it’s going to feel a bit different this year. For the first time since 1994, we won’t see Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson in the field. Tiger is stepping away from the game at the moment, and Phil has pulled out due to a personal family health matter.
Scottie Scheffler is the man to beat as usual, and Rory McIlroy is coming in as the defending champ, but there are so many hungry players ready to strike.
Right, you know the drill. Before you lock in your picks, make sure you go back and listen to our latest podcast episode. We dropped a US Masters Special where we go through our outright bets, a few longshots, and we even have a quiz to see how well you actually know the US Masters. It’s essential listening.
The wait is over. Clear your schedule, and enjoy the first major of the year.
Enjoy the walk.
