Snedeker’s Sunday Specials

This week was all about the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club’s Course No. 3 in Chicago. The International team produced a 5-0 clean sweep in Friday’s foursomes, putting themselves in a great position to win the Presidents Cup for only the second time—and first on American soil.

The US team hung in, closing the gap on Saturday to head into Sunday singles just three points behind. Brandt Snedeker’s players knew if they got red on the board early, the home crowd would respond. It did. They won the singles 9.5-2.5, surpassing the 15.5 points needed and winning 17-13.

Now, I don’t like to brag, and I can almost guarantee I’ll never do this again, but in our Solheim Cup preview podcast I predicted Europe would win 15-13. In last week’s Presidents Cup preview, I predicted Team USA would win 17-13. I didn’t put a bet on either—typical—but that would’ve been a nice double!

My standout player was Snedeker’s captain’s pick, Jackson Koivun. The 21-year-old went unbeaten in three matches, winning two and halving one. He turned pro earlier this year and won his first PGA Tour event in only his third start as a pro. You can see this young man being a regular Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup player for years. An exceptional talent with an old head on young shoulders.

Captain Snedeker needed his team to deliver Sunday. US President Donald Trump was on the first tee to give the US team encouragement. I thought Geoff Ogilvy was exceptionally gracious in his interview afterwards. His team will be disappointed because they had a chance to create history and will feel they let it get away.

But that’s golf. On paper, this was the outcome most predicted. But golf isn’t played on paper. The underdogs gave a good showing but came up just short.
